A few parents have asked me why we are not “diving into the curriculum” right away with La ola del lago students. I would like to put a different spin on this question. Language learning is a very complex process; it takes years of exposure and practice to truly become proficient in a language. The first few weeks of Spanish immersion Kindergarten are spent with students actively receiving language and vocabulary input throughout their entire day. One important thing to remember is our students learn the target language (Spanish) through literally being immersed in it. Our students are learning one Spanish word and phrase at a time through the repetition of songs, chants, phrases, and exaggerated gestures. They are also learning the rules of school and how to be a student as well – all through their rudimentary understanding of the Spanish language. Even as students walk in a line from one class to the next, they are continually being exposed to phrases like: manos atrás, bocas cerradas, pies quietos, fila recta, espacio personal, etc. The Spanish immersion “classroom” begins the second they set foot in La ola del lago. If you have any further questions about how the curriculum and second language acquisition process works at La ola del lago, I would encourage you to attend our parent night scheduled for Thursday, November 6 at 6:30. Also, you can always feel free to contact me directly at [email protected] or 952.226.0903.
